Austin Barbell National Team Criteria
At Austin Barbell, National Team status is reserved for athletes who are actively pursuing national-level competition, consistently representing the club, and meeting the standards expected of a high-performance training environment. It reflects not only competitive results, but also ongoing commitment to the process, the team, and long-term development.
We created these standards to make the process objective, fair, and clearly defined. The goal is to establish criteria that reflects performance, commitment, and representation.
Performance Standard
To be recognized as an Austin Barbell National Team athlete, an athlete must achieve at least 90% of the current USA Weightlifting National Championship qualifying total for their age and weight category in a sanctioned competition.
This standard creates a measurable benchmark and ensures that National Team status is reserved for athletes who are genuinely progressing toward national-level competition.

200Kg x .90 = 180Kg (Austin Barbell National Qualifying Standard)
2. Team Representation
National Team athletes must compete under Austin Barbell and wear the official Austin Barbell singlet or logo at sanctioned competitions where team scoring, representation, or qualification matters.
Athletes representing the National Team should do so clearly and consistently.
Team Training Requirement
Athletes on the National Team are expected to attend at least one Austin Barbell National Team training session per month.
This requirement helps maintain connection to the coaching staff, the training environment, and the standards expected of National Team athletes.
3. Good Standing
To qualify, athletes must remain in good standing with Austin Barbell. This includes:
Maintaining an active membership or coaching relationship
Remaining current on payments
Demonstrating respectful conduct toward coaches, teammates, and staff
Communicating consistently about competition plans
Good standing with USAW
No Pending SafeSport cases or investigation
No current USADA sanctions
These standards are part of being a reliable and accountable member of the team.
4. Competition Intent
An athlete must demonstrate a clear intention to pursue national-level competition within the current season or qualifying window.
In addition, athletes are expected to compete for Austin Barbell at approved sanctioned events at least once per year. This ensures that National Team designation remains connected to active competition and ongoing development.
5. Coach-Approved Training Plan
National Team athletes must follow a coach-approved training plan.
This helps ensure that training is structured, purposeful, and aligned with the athlete’s long-term competition goals.
6. Training Journal and Data Collection
Athletes on the National Team are expected to maintain a consistent training journal and participate in basic data collection as directed by their coach.
This includes recording training loads, results, readiness, and other key performance notes so progress can be evaluated objectively over time. Consistent tracking helps coaches make better decisions and gives athletes a clearer view of their development.
7. Final Approval
Even when an athlete meets the written standards, final designation as an Austin Barbell National Team athlete is subject to Head Coach review and approval.
This allows for coaching judgment to be applied where appropriate and ensures that National Team status reflects both performance and overall alignment with the team’s values and standards.
